STRESS MANAGEMENT WITH THE DEROSE METHOD

X

A SPECIAL COLLABORATION WITH NICOLE PIEPER

What is Stress?

Stress is a very normal part of every day life and is our response to all new and unfamiliar situations. However, we need to take great care that this stress response isn’t triggered unnecessarily. We can also work on reducing the intensity of our stress response. If we don’t, we run the risk of overwhelming our nervous system. In the long-term this can lead to many unwanted and even life-threatening consequences.

SUMMARY
  • The two primary ingredients, essential for stress management, are: developing a high self-esteemand maintaining a high level of energy.
  • Tools on how to build self-esteem and maintain a high level of energy were discussed and practiced.
  • The participants are now left with a challenge: to pick any one of the tools/techniques and practice it daily for at least one week. At the end of the week, theycan decide to stick with it or try another.
Stress management is a vast subject. To live well and deal well with all that life throws at us, we need to train: physically, emotionally and mentally to gain strength, flexibility and stability, internally as well as externally.
The DeRose Method teaches hundreds of techniques as well as lifestyle concepts for quality of life and high performance. Nicole will be opening a DeRose Method School offering regular classes, workshops and get-togethers.

WHY DEVELOP A HIGH SELF ESTEEM?
Think back to how you are when you feel most confident?

It most likely includes feeling comfortable, easy-going, approachable and with a feeling of being in control, i.e. able to adapt effortlessly to different situations?

A high self-esteem implies working on our ability to self-observe; to be mindful of our words and actions and the effects these have on ourselves, as well as the people and the environment around us. It implies recognizing our values and living in congruence with them.

We can build on our self-esteem using some tools, highlighted below.

WHY HIGH ENERGY?

Think back to how you are when you feel full of energy?

You feel fit, healthy and ready to move.

High energy requires good nutrition and taking care of our physical body by listening to what it needs. Equally, it requires us to train our emotions so that our interactions with others become easier and lighter.  High energy levels also help us develop self-dependence, which in turn, supports our self-esteem.

Tools to help us manage our stress, by increasing our energy and self-esteem:

Connect to friends and family
Choose your friends and the people you spend time with, well. Surround yourself with people you can trust; who support you and share in your challenges as well as your successes.

Techniques:
  • Reflect on your relationships.
  • Who do you feel good with? Which of your friends and family members support you?
  • Who would you like to spend more time with and who would you like to see less of or even cut ties with?

Visualize
Take time to visualize best-case scenarios. What would you like or like to learn from any given situation? How would you like to feel and be treated? How would you like to treat others?
What would make this ideal happen and what can you do to achieve these results?
We won’t always get exactly what we want. However, we will begin to create the reality that we desire by adjusting our actions and modifying our behaviour to move us towards our goals.

Techniques:
  • Set clear goals for yourself (weekly, monthly, annually)
  • Take 5 minutes every morning to visualize yourself achieving your goals. (The more detailed and specific your visualization, the more achievable it will become.)

Cultivate your Inner attitude
Focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want and then take responsibility for taking the relevant action.

Techniques:
  • Identify your values and your purpose. Remind yourself of these, especially during more stressful times.
  • Keep notes on the kind of life you would like to create.
  • Always try to act and base any decisions you make in accordance with your values

Breathe consciously
Our breathing has a huge influence over our nervous system, and as a consequence, on our emotional state. Generally, the slower and deeper we breathe, the more we stimulate the parasympathetic system and the more “relaxed” we become.

Techniques:
  • 5 to 10 minutes per day (lying down or sitting): Quadratic breathing: breathe in for 4 sec, hold for 4 sec, exhale for 4 sec and hold without air for 4 sec.

Organize your life
De-clutter your life of things that don’t carry meaning or drain your energy and learn to prioritize.

Techniques
:
  • Set aside some time on a regular basis to de-clutter; beginning with one room or calendar page at a time.
  • Schedule your time to better manage it e.g. prioritize good sleep and exercise over long hours in front of a screen
  • If it’s a task that you don’t like but need to do, try to relate it to your purpose and the results you’d like to create with it in the long-term.

YOUR CHALLENGE

Pick any one of the tools/techniques above and practice it daily for at least one week. At the end of the week, you can decide to stick with it or try another.

And to continue
