TOPIC OF CONVERSATION #3 OF 2019
The unattractiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) brings up a worrisome trend to what is and is not worthwhile to learn and read about. When there is something that feels complicated or too distant, our interest and attention diminishes.

The concern is real because there is a bigger picture.

This disproportionate interest in some topics over others can lead to consequences that truly impact our quality of life and the world we wish to live in. For example, we may complain about the urban planning of a city we live in, yet we had the chance to have our say.

It's when we ignore these less, good-looking topics that we end up missing out on the opportunities to really have our say in the shape of our future.

And AI is a perfect example of this.

In February 2018 the WOM newsletter shared this article about the current male default setting bringing conscious awareness of what is. Because the first step to makechanges (toward a more preferable situation) requires identifying the current situation.

If ever you’ve found something frustrating to use ask yourself, who built this, who designed this?

And perhaps there is one detail of what is being built around us that has been overlooked that requires a lot more attention that it is given. Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Let's give AI another chance.
It is a technology that has been created and been part of our lives in too many ways that we are not even aware of, influencing our thoughts and habits, leading us to know about some information but keeping us blind to other facts and impacting our future from career to health.

In addition to the examples highlighted in the AI-focused newsletter, some additional links may prove positively interesting and offer some surprising awareness.
Positively Interesting
* To make AI a little easier to grasp, co-founder of the Feminist Internet, Charlotte Web and her team have created a chatbot that informs users about AI issues.

* AI has been doing wonders in many areas such as health. It has made what is normally an arduous job in the treatment preparation process of prostate cancer, into one that is done within minutes. This technology is not seen as replacing doctors but instead freeing up time for doctors to continue developing and applying their expertise.

* Amazon took action when they realised their AI hiring software was biased towards men for the tech jobs.

* Some other large companies, such as Microsoft, are aware of the biases in their products and are working on taking the precaution when deciding which companies and organisations can purchase and integrate Microsoft AI software into their systems. Some organisation requests have been rejected because of the danger in the biases.

A Surprising Awareness
* Speaking of Amazon's hiring software attempt, listen to this BBC Radio episode on how AI is affecting the hiring process beyond what we have already known.

* And how about the role of AI in the US judicial system. It may be far from your home geographically, but in terms of technology, no boundaries exist.

* The lack of diversity amongst those creating AI and the data used will continue to encrust the already existing inequalities reported by AI Now.

If we really believe that we can make changes to improve our world into one that is a new normal and that is indeed reflective of reality, AI is too big of an issue to ignore.
Results of the last poll
