THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY CAN PLAY A LARGE ROLE IN IMPROVING VISIBILITY AND CONSCIOUS AWARENESS
The previous Newsletter addressed the phrase - 'we can’t be who we can’t see'. Let's look at this in the advertising industry.
A small disclaimer: This Newsletter’s theme opens up a tin of worms, and this is ok, because if we want to make real changes we need to have the real talk. There are two sides of the industry that need to be addressed. On one side is the gender diversity of who is working in the industry. On the other is what the industry is producing that the world sees, for example, the depiction of genders in advertising campaigns. |
One side - Who
Merely looking at the gender divide of those working in the advertising industry one could say the numbers are good, however with a bit of scrutiny, where the numbers could use a lot of work are in the highly influential roles (Creative Directors) that remain male-dominated. Kat Gordon is one of the big shakers trying to change this with The 3% Movement.
Some of the most impactful speeches delivered at the 3% Conferences have been those given by Cindy Gallop who advocates that “Nothing changes until the gender of leadership is balanced.”
But improved numbers isn’t the only solution. What happens inside the industry is where serious changes need to be made. And perhaps the new Time’s Up initiative for the advertising industry may help with changing these internal practices.
The view point from some incredible female leaders can give a lot of clues to where work needs to get done.
And of course, let's not forget, diversity in the workforce isn't only about genders as it also affects and reflects what the industry produces. Those benefiting from any changes for the better, need to also carry these changes further.
