THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY CAN PLAY AN INFLUENTIAL ROLE IN IMPROVING VISIBILITY AND CONSCIOUS AWARENESS
Part 1 looked at one side of the advertising industry; the who,  i.e. the people working within the industry. This second part is looking at the what; the images and messages the world sees.

THE OTHER SIDE - WHAT IS ADVERTISED

In the current talk about conscious awareness, we are beginning to realise how much we have accepted without thinking about what we see. Want to know what really is being depicted in advertisements? Ask children what they see.

The United Nations has even taken initiative.

And when we speak of diversity, it isn't only about gender but all diversity. This Shutterstock research provides interesting findings.

And effective this year, the U.K.'s Advertising Standards Authority is eliminating gender stereotypes in advertising. An initiative that more than 20 countries have already undertaken.

The advertising industry has a huge impact on our lives and behaviours.  As a result, this industry can make a positive impact through the right changes to who is involved in the creative process and what is depicted in the advertising campaigns.
By paying attention to the images on the TV, magazines, billboards, etc, you may start to notice some glaring issues.

We are the receivers of these messages, and so we also have a role to play in communicating what we want to see.

Watch: The Hershey company has never had a female CEO in its 123 years of history until now. Watch a brief interview with Michele Buck, where she shares some interesting points about being a CEO and the importance of having diverse teams.

Read: The Clam Club is a community bringing together women who work in the film and gastronomic industries to build a network that helps them get ahead. Read about their launch event for further explanation of the initiative and objective.

Listen: It’s a fact, history does repeat itself. Although we tend to believe that our experiences have never occurred before, you'll be surprised that in fact, simply by turning to history, there are many lessons one can learn from similar situations. Listen to this Recode Decode interview with Nancy Koehn, a historian of business, talk about the importance of historical leaders and how their work and experiences can be used to assist us in our present.
