COMPETITION - WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN?
Picture

The root word of competition is ‘compete’ originating from the classical Latin word ‘competere’ meaning to meet; coincide; be fitting; suffice. Deconstructed ‘com’ means together and ‘petere’ means to seek. And the classical Latin verb ‘to compete’ means to strive together, agree.

This seems quite in contrast to the modern use and definition of competition and to compete which holds a more negative implication - to strive to outdo another for supremacy; engage in contest. Unlike the classical Latin origin that reflects a more positive spirit.

For Word of Mouth, competition is not about finding ways of aggressive advancement, a race or to put others down.

Word of Mouth is a community with an approach that reflects more of the classical Latin spirit, that of striving together.

Watch: Kids are a great resource when you want to know what something really looks like. A Swedish company decided to see the reaction of kids when it came to the wage gap.

Read: A recent Harvard Business Review has touched on a very poignant topic about women and men at work. This is in good timing as regards WOM's mission. It's about really looking at the situation, identifying what the real issues are, so that relevant actions can be taken. The article provides some great examples of this.

Listen: Sophia Amoruso has had a career of ups and downs and definitely can dish out advice from her personal professional experiences. Her Girlboss podcast interviews are always interesting talking to women from all industries. One of the most recent interviews was with Nicole Quinn an investing partner with Lightning Speed Ventures.
