Jaclyn Zimmerman (Wined-Up)

1st Wine Tasting, 2018 series

A Tour of Germany

For the first wine tasting collaboration with Jaclyn Zimmerman, it was decided to stay local. Based in Berlin and knowing that German wines don’t have the same reputation as say French and Italian, it was time to put the spotlight on Germany and experience a tour around Germany. Here are some points from the tasting:

German grapes:
-- Silvaner
-- Weißburgunder (pinot blanc)
-- Grauburgunder (pinot gris/grigio)
-- Riesling
-- Spätburgunder (pinot noir)
-- Merlot and Dornfelder together make a red cuvée
-- Scheurebe (Riesling and an unknown parent)

Stelvin
-- A screw cap (twist top)
-- It has been around since the 70s, first widely adopted by Swiss winemakers in the 80s
Bocksbeutel
-- Wine bottle shape from Franken
-- Name derives from a Satchel (Beutel) of books (Buch)
-- helpful because they don't roll down hills (if you happen to be having a picnic on a hill)

Shortened height of Riesling bottles

-- in order to fit in your fridge

The 0.75l size of a wine bottle is one breath of a glass blower.

All different heights
What about the liquid?
* Did you know, you can only smell things that you've smelt before.
-- if you've never smelled peaches, you won't be able to smell it in a wine that someone else may identify..

The Tasting Menu
Other facts
* Older white wines may develop tartaric crystals (i.e. Weinstein ).

* Younger red wines are more red/purple

-- older ones are more red/brown.

* Year of vintage -- the years the grapes were picked.

* The grapevines on higher elevation work harder and are thus superior in quality, whereas down below are the 'lazy' ones,  more watery and tend to be used for the cheaper wines.

* 30 Minute Rule: Temperature for drinking wine

-- white wine in the fridge, take it out 30 minutes before you drink it
-- red wine, put it in the fridge 30 minutes before you drink it.

* The Pfalz region is the multi-climate area able to produce an incredible range of grapes.

* Different styles of Oak

--French oak is more walnut and it has a tighter grain and grows slower
--American oak has a wider grain, grows much faster and produces more vanilla/coconut flavours.

Please note all proceeds of the tasting go to Wined-Up to cover the costs of her expertise and all the expenses contributing to providing a quality tasting.
