Jaclyn Zimmerman (Wined-Up)

2nd Wine Tasting, 2018 series

It’s all about the bubbles

Do you get more influenced by a name/brand or do you follow closely to what you like? In this blind tasting session, we learned how champagne is made, where the bubbles come from and that SIZE really does matter (of the bubbles, of course). Guests were also treated to a very special bubbly, an award-wining British sparkling wine, Nyetimber (not easy to find in Germany).  Some guests were very surprised at what bubbles they actually preferred. Here are some points from the tasting:

The tasting menu consisted of these sparkling wines:
-- Prosecco
-- Crémant
-- Italian Sparkling (a Frizzante was tested)
-- Sekt
-- Champagne
-- English Sparkling

The Tasting Menu
* Bubble size does matter, the smaller the better as it takes longer to rise to the surface.

* Champagne is made with three grapes: pinot meunier, pinot noir and chardonnay; but if you get a Blanc de Blanc, this is 100% chardonnay.

* Tastings of sparkling wines are often separated into: Brut Nature,  Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry/Extra Trocken, Dry/Trocken, progressively getting sweeter...

* Champagne is a French sparkling wine (Cremant), from the region of Champagne. Wonderful other sparkling wines can be found around the world, including England, as delicious alternatives to Champagne. It is believed that the 2018 vintage in the UK will be a great year because of the weather, so look out for it in about three years.

Please note all proceeds of the tasting go to Wined-Up to cover the costs of her expertise and all the expenses contributing to providing a quality tasting.
